Karnataka is set to launch India’s first state-backed Artificial Intelligence University, a move announced by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday to cement the state’s position as a global leader in responsible AI development.
Core Initiatives
- AI University: A first-of-its-kind government-driven institution dedicated to developing top-tier AI talent, advancing technical research, and connecting academia, industry, and the state.
- AI Hub: A dedicated facility functioning as an incubation center to support startups, established tech companies, and research stakeholders.
Strategic Vision: The “AI-Native State”
The state aims to fully integrate artificial intelligence into public systems to improve the speed and dignity of public service delivery, focusing on five key areas:
- Education: Assisting educators to improve teaching methods.
- Healthcare: Enabling earlier and more accurate disease diagnosis.
- Agriculture: Providing farmers with better data and advisory services.
- Governance: Helping citizens access services rapidly and seamlessy.
- Commerce: Giving small businesses the tools to compete globally.
Current Regional Tech Strength
- Export Leader: Karnataka accounts for roughly 40% of all software exports out of India.
- Tech Ecosystem: The capital city, Bengaluru, hosts more than 17,000 startups alongside thousands of Global Capability Centres (GCCs).
- Infrastructure Support: The government committed to expanding digital infrastructure, particularly data and cloud computing centers, to handle heavy AI workloads.

During the Google I/O Connect India 2026 event, a formal invitation was extended to Google to deepen its local presence by:
